Swim Lessons

We decided that John Turner really needed to take swimming lessons this summer. Since he is only two and very scared of new experiences and new people, we knew that private lessons were the only way to go this summer. We were very fortunate to find a wonderful swim instructor. Ms. Liz was fabulous with him! She is a teacher of first graders during the school year so she knew just how to make John Turner feel comfortable!

The first few days were a little rough on him. First, I had to just drop him off and leave him there with total strangers! Second, he had to put his face in the water at least three times at his first lesson. John Turner does not like to be left with strangers and he does not like water in his face! After day one, Ms. Liz told him to bring a favorite toy that could do swimming lessons with him the rest of the week. Well, that worked like magic! He decided to take two of his Weebles, one boy and one girl, with him on day 2. He still was upset about putting his face in the water on day 2, but overall a much better experience. Each day just got better and better! He got braver and was following commands in the water! He especially enjoyed when he got to use the pool noodles and the pool rings!

Today was his last day and when I picked him up I got to sit by the pool and let him show me what he had learned this week. I was amazed! That boy paddled his hands and kicked his feet with his face underwater from his instructor to her assistant! This was a huge step for him! On the ride home today he said, "Mommy, I am so proud of myself!" Mommy and Daddy are very proud of him too!! We love that precious thing!!
